Album Back-Story
You Are My Friend is a collection of songs in which we explored relationships – from the relationship with God to the relationship with your spouse, and from the relationship with your mother to the relationship with someone you might not even know.
We were young at the time – young in ministry, and with a young family. We especially wanted to explore friendships. This album was actually written with our friends in mind. It was never offered for sale, but we made a limited number of copies and gifted them to our friends to help let them know how special we thought they were.
This was the first album that we recorded in our own studio. The music was written and arranged, and all of the instrumental and vocal parts were done by Jim and myself. Jim was also the studio engineer and used a small eight-track recorder.
This was also the first time that we used the donkey image as a visual representation of Music for the Christian Warrior. Why a donkey? In the book of Numbers, chapter 22, God reprimands Balaam by allowing a donkey to speak to him prophetically because he ignored the warning of the prophet that God sent. We simply wanted to remind ourselves that, while God prefers to use His people, He can use any method He desires to get His message across. This was our semi-humorous way of constantly reminding ourselves that HE is the Creator and we are the created.
Son's Song
Son’s Song is a very personal introspective look inside at some of the confusing questions that have to be encountered and answered by a young man on his way to manhood.
LYRICS
Verse 1
A man grows up little by little
He changes heart little by little
Who knows how he’ll grow
Who knows where he’ll go
He makes his plans little by little
Here to there, hill after hill
As mountains they seem to grow
The going is sometimes slow
I feel like I’m wasting time
Looking for those dreams that I left behind
But why would God allow those to be a part
Of such a tender place in my heart
Verse 2
Will I grow strong as I grow older
Will I be long in building over
Step by step I go
Inch by inch I grow
Come with me, we’ll go it together
Succeed or fail, it doesn’t matter
As long as we both know
The changes may come slow
We’ll go on spending time
Looking for those dreams that we left behind
And I’ll make for you a special part
Of this tender place in my heart
Verse 3
There comes a time to pull back the cover
A man must one day leave his mother
As dear as she may be, that’s how it has to be
So I’ll raise my head and stand a bit taller
So people don’t go digging deeper
It’s time to be a man
It’s all a part of the plan
I’ll go on spending time
Looking for those dreams that I left behind
And I pray to God she’ll remain a part
Of this tender place in my heart
