Step 5 of the Abrahamic Covenant:
Exchange Names
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
Genesis 17:5
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
Genesis 17:15
Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham …
Exodus 3:6
The fifth step in the covenant ceremony was to exchange names. Each partner took on the name of the covenant partner as a part of his own name. In today’s marriage ceremonies, the wife takes on the last name of her husband. In many cultures, the husband also takes on the last name of his wife.
In the covenant that God made with Abram, God became known as the God of Abraham. Both Abram and Sarai took on a part of God’s unspeakable name to become Abraham and Sarah. When we accept the covenant that Jesus ratified for us, we become known as the children of God, Christians, and co-heirs with Christ.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God … John 1:23
… And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 11:26
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:14
Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Galatians 4:7
