The Bible tells us that God has three parts.

1. He is a Father. Abraham called him Father, and Jesus called him Father.

2. He is a manifest being. In the Old Testament, we can see this in the book of Joshua. The Captain of the Lord’s host appeared to Joshua. You might think that this was just an angel, but in every other place where an angel appears, the angel forbids the person from worshiping him, saying, I am just an angel. But when the Captain of the Lord’s host appeared to Joshua, he commanded Joshua to take off his sandals for the place where he walked was holy. This was the pre-incarnate form of Jesus.

In the New Testament, we see how God put His manifest presence into human form in Jesus. Jesus is called the Son of God. He is the manifest presence of God.

3. He is a Spirit. In Genesis 1 we can read: In the beginning, the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep. When Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God fell on him like a dove.

God imprinted His three parts on man

In the book of Genesis, it says that God made man in His image.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 1:26.

So, what are those three parts? Let’s dig in.

The Human Body

First, let’s look at our amazing, magnificent bodies. The human body is one of the most amazing pieces of engineering that you will ever see. The psalmist said this:

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Psalm 136:14

God formed man from the dust of the ground and made a wonderful and delightful place for us to live while on the earth. Think about all your moving parts, the intricacy of your various systems, the imaginative and practical nature of all of your extremities. It is more intricate than any house or even the most state-of-the-art government building.

Your brain is more complex and versatile than any computer. It has the ability to create, perform complex tasks, store memories, and all the while, maintain your various systems so that you can dwell comfortably inside your body. A building the size of New York City could not house a computer big enough to do what your brain can do.

And then think of your body, itself. What an intricate and complicated body it is. And all of the plans come from microscopic blueprints called DNA. Did you know that, according to Lee Strobel, if you took all of the DNA from every person in the whole world and put it in a pile, it would take up the space of about half an aspirin tablet? God made this amazing molecule that could take a single human fertilized cell and from it create your liver, brain, heart, skin, and all of the various parts of you.

Your body is the perfect home to live in while you are on the earth. But like any house, it needs constant maintenance, repairs from time to time, and there comes a time that, like any house, it just does not have the strength or health to function any longer.

The Human Soul

Your soul is the part of you that allows your body to communicate with this beautiful world that the Lord created for you to live in. It houses your five senses, your emotions, your personality; it is the seat of your will, and is the place where your character grows. You were created in the likeness of God. You have his character, his goodness, his mercy, his desires. These things come to you in seed form, and how you grow them in this life determines your ultimate character.

The Human Spirit

God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life. In other words, He breathed his spirit into man.

Scientists cannot explain the mystery of death. A person’s body can be kept functioning after death, but it does not put life back into it. Once the spirit has left it’s house, or body, the house becomes empty and dead.

Many do not realize that there is a difference between the soul and the spirit of man. They may have been taught to believe that man is a body and soul, only. But the scriptures make it clear that the two are completely different.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit.

Hebrews 4:12

In addition, the Bible talks about this three-part nature of man in several places:

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

Communication with God

So, what does all of this have to do with the ability to communicate with God?

God created our bodies and our souls that we could function in the world that He made for us. He put a spirit into each of us to give us a direct way to communicate with Him.

When a baby comes into the world, it’s spirit is alive to God. Indeed, there have been testimonies of young babies who have testified to God speaking to them. Whether you believe this or not, please grasp the important part of this: A baby has not had time to become distracted with life. It has not had time to  be ‘talked out of’ believing that God will speak to him/her. I choose to believe that this happens whether or not the child can communicate about it not.

Paul said this about his own childhood:

For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

Romans 7:9-10

What was Paul saying here?

In this extremely important and revealing passage, Paul was talking about his childhood. He said that his spirit was alive to God until the first time that he understood that he disobeyed what he knew to be a order or an instruction whether from his parents, or from some other authoritative figure. It could have been as simple as ‘don’t run out into the street’ or ‘don’t throw food at  your sister.’  He was saying that the first time that he disobeyed, not out of misunderstanding or ignorance, but out of rebellion, then this is when sin entered his life and his spirit man died to God.

We are all in this situation. It’s no wonder that the Israelites could never attain the righteousness needed to enter into the presence of God.

But the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ changed this. His sacrifice was made so that our spirits could come back to life again. This is why repenting and asking Jesus to be your Lord and Savior is called being ‘born-again.’ It is because your spirit is revived and the part of you that communicates with God is once again functional.

One of the biggest hindrances that I have seen to flowing into this ability  to communicate with God is that for most of us, we are out of practice and we don’t understand that this is a possibility.

Here are a couple of methods that I have discovered: We all talk about our consciences. I believe that this is one of God’s ways, through His Holy Spirit, of speaking to us. We may not hear a voice, but rather get a feeling about something. I think another method of communication is through our intuition. This is another way for us to get a feel for what should be or should not be. Either way, it takes some practice to get back into the habit of 2-way conversations with God.

That’s all for now.

Be a blessing and be blest. -Ch
