And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts [Yahweh Tsebaoth] in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.

1 Samuel 1:3

Lord of Hosts is a name of God that is first seen in 1 Samuel 1:3 in the chronicle of Hannah, mother of the prophet Samuel. This post, entitled Yahweh Tsebaoth, embraces the Hebrew name of God. He is also called Jehovah Sabaoth in English commentaries and some Bibles.

So, what was a host? At first thought, a host was a great army. After doing a bit of research, I found that there are angelic hosts, heavenly hosts (stars & planets), and earthly hosts, such as the host of Israelites that came out of Egypt, as well as military hosts. I came to the conclusion that a host was not only a military designation, but also had to do with large numbers, such as large numbers of locusts, frogs, etc. Basically, what this means is that the Lord of Hosts is Lord over everything in Creation (duh!).

Below is a list of all of the verses that I could find that use the phrase ‘Lord of Hosts.’ There are around 265 verses, most of them coming from the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah. I have also identified other names of God that were included in the target verses.

Scriptures are from the King James Version of the Bible. The Hebrew names are from both Strong’s Concordance Hebrew Dictionary and The Names of God Bible. Many thanks go to biblegateway.com. Because of their many Bible versions, this little exercise only took me three days, instead of three months!
