Family Bibles

Oma has several large family Bibles. A family Bible is one that has special pages in it where you can write in births, marriages and deaths. Family Bibles are wonderful places to learn about family history.

This particular Bible is the Taylor Family Bible. In it are all of the significant events of the Taylor family.

My great-great-grandmother, Margaret Taylor, was a Catherwood before she married into the Taylor family, so the Catherwood family has been added on extra pages. There were 11 Catherwood brothers and sisters. Great-great-grandfather John G. Taylor had 11 other brothers and sisters in his family. His brothers and sisters are written in on extra pages as well.

You can see that this Bible is very old. Of all of the Bibles that Oma has, this one is my favorite. It is not the prettiest, but it has all sorts of names and dates in it. It tells who the spouses were, and even tells the maiden names of the women that married into the family, a very difficult (even impossible, sometimes) item to track down, believe me.

Samuel Catherwood Sr. was the first Catherwood in our family to arrive from Ireland. (I guess you could say that he was our great-great-great-grandfather, right?) He came sometime in the late 1700s and lived in Pennsylvania for a while, then moved to Kentucky.

Of the Taylors, although I am currently following some interesting leads, I don’t have any confirmed information before 1786, when Joseph Taylor, the father of great-great-grandfather John G. Taylor, was born.

Hope all of this ‘greatness’ didn’t make your head spin too much. 🙂
