Album Back-Story
You Are My Friend is a collection of songs in which we explored relationships – from the relationship with God to the relationship with your spouse, and from the relationship with your mother to the relationship with someone you might not even know.
We were young at the time – young in ministry, and with a young family. We especially wanted to explore friendships. This album was actually written with our friends in mind. It was never offered for sale, but we made a limited number of copies and gifted them to our friends to help let them know how special we thought they were.
This was the first album that we recorded in our own studio. The music was written and arranged, and all of the instrumental and vocal parts were done by Jim and myself. Jim was also the studio engineer and used a small eight-track recorder.
This was also the first time that we used the donkey image as a visual representation of Music for the Christian Warrior. Why a donkey? In the book of Numbers, chapter 22, God reprimands Balaam by allowing a donkey to speak to him prophetically because he ignored the warning of the prophet that God sent. We simply wanted to remind ourselves that, while God prefers to use His people, He can use any method He desires to get His message across. This was our semi-humorous way of constantly reminding ourselves that HE is the Creator and we are the created.
Dare To Believe is based on: 1 Corinthians 1:25; 1 Corinthians 2:14; 1 Corinthians 3:19
Dare to Believe
The instruments used for Dare To Believe were completely synthesized. We used our Roland keyboard and Jim worked for hours to perfect the sounds of the trumpets and the drums.
LYRICS
Verse 1
The wisdom of God
is foolishness to man
Believe it in your heart
or you’ll never understand
It’s not written in the stars
or on the palm of your hand
It’s not in a crystal ball:
It’s in a Father’s loving plan
Chorus
Just dare to believe
Dare to believe
Dare to believe
in Jesus, in Jesus
Verse 2
He chose the foolish things
to confound even the wise
Believe it in your heart;
you won’t see it with your eyes
It’s not something you can earn,
it’s not sold at any price
Eternal life is free to you:
it’s not that hard to find
Chorus
Jesus, that name above all names
Jesus, You know God is so wise
Jesus, God love us so much that
He sent His own son to pay the price
Verse 3
They nailed Him to a tree,
They laid Him in a grave
He broke the gates of Hell:
He wouldn’t be their slave
He crushed the serpent’s head
and after three long days
He returned to the living.
He really is the way
Chorus
