Album Back-Story
You Are My Friend is a collection of songs in which we explored relationships – from the relationship with God to the relationship with your spouse, and from the relationship with your mother to the relationship with someone you might not even know.
We were young at the time – young in ministry, and with a young family. We especially wanted to explore friendships. This album was actually written with our friends in mind. It was never offered for sale, but we made a limited number of copies and gifted them to our friends to help let them know how special we thought they were.
This was the first album that we recorded in our own studio. The music was written and arranged, and all of the instrumental and vocal parts were done by Jim and myself. Jim was also the studio engineer and used a small eight-track recorder.
This was also the first time that we used the donkey image as a visual representation of Music for the Christian Warrior. Why a donkey? In the book of Numbers, chapter 22, God reprimands Balaam by allowing a donkey to speak to him prophetically because he ignored the warning of the prophet that God sent. We simply wanted to remind ourselves that, while God prefers to use His people, He can use any method He desires to get His message across. This was our semi-humorous way of constantly reminding ourselves that HE is the Creator and we are the created.
I Need Someone
Jim was very touched by the needs of the widows and those others who could not fend for themselves. In his poet’s mind, he formulated several scenarios of people in need and ended up writing I Need Someone.
LYRICS
Verse 1
An elderly man sitting in his lonely room
It’s been a long time since he’s seen his family
He opens up the Book but there’s a tear in his eye
Where’s their love, where’s their sight, where’s their sound
His legs are feeble now, his eyes are dimming down
He’s not the man that he wants to be
But deep inside his heart there’s one hope that is alive
Dear Jesus, please come to my side
Chorus
‘Cause I need someone
who’ll put their arms around me
Someone who’ll tell me Jesus loves me
Someone, I need someone who will care
I need someone to give me hope for tomorrow
Someone to take away my sorrow
Someone, I need someone who will care
Verse 2
A man who broke the law many long years ago
He’s crying in that cell of concrete and steel
He opens up the Book left by a friend just passing by
And those words heal every wound
But he’s still inside that cell and those chains are very real
But there’s no one who will comfort him today
But deep inside his heart there’s one hope that is alive
Dear Jesus, please come to my side
Chorus
‘Cause I need someone
who’ll put their arms around me
Someone who’ll tell me Jesus loves me
Someone, I need someone who will care
I need someone to give me hope for tomorrow
Someone to take away my sorrow
Someone, I need someone who will care
Chorus 2
Be that someone, go put your arm around them
Someone, go tell them Jesus loves them
Someone, be that someone who will care
Be that someone, go give them hope for tomorrow
Someone, go take away their sorrow
Someone, be that someone who will care
